Let’s delve into the plot, shall we? In 1847, a king, burdened by the weight of his kingdom, embarks on a quest for true happiness. His journey leads him to a mystical forest occupied by Panjurli Daiva, a deity safeguarding the villagers. Here, he encounters a holy stone and, in an altruistic gesture, donates a vast portion of his land to the villagers in exchange for the stone. Panjurli, however, issues a warning – the king’s family must keep their word, or face the wrath of Panjurli’s companion, the ferocious spirit named Guliga Daiva.
Fast forward to 1970, and the king’s descendant seeks to reclaim the land, arguing with a Bhoota Kola performer possessed by Panjurli. The performer, possessed by the Gods, however, defies the request, predicting dire consequences if the land is reclaimed, before disappearing in the forests. True to the warning, the king’s successor dies mysteriously, vomiting blood, just months later.
In 1990, we meet Murali, a forest officer tasked with converting the villagers’ land into a forest reserve. His path crosses with Shiva, a Kambala athlete and the son of the earlier Bhoota Kola performer. Shiva, traumatized by his father’s disappearance, refuses to perform the ritual. The stage is set for a clash between tradition and progress.
As the feud between Murali and Shiva escalates, Murali decides to arrest Shiva, leading to a series of events that culminate in a tragic accident involving Murali’s jeep. Shiva, under the influence of grief and drugs, becomes a fugitive along with his companions. The conflict intensifies as the villagers resist the forest reserve, creating a rift between Shiva and Leela, his love interest and now a forest guard.
In a twist of fate, Shiva and Murali put aside their differences to unite against the true antagonist, Devendra – the scheming landlord with intentions of seizing the villagers’ land. The climax unfolds in an intense battle, leading to Shiva’s possession by Guliga. In this possessed state, Shiva exacts revenge on Devendra and his henchmen.
Months later, Shiva again performs the Bhoota Kola, symbolizing unity between the villagers and Murali. Shiva, possessed by Panjurli, disappears into the forest after a mysterious encounter, leaving the village with a sense of closure. The mid-credits scene hints at the continuity of the mystical tale as Shiva and Leela’s son inquires about his father’s disappearance.
