Young Narendranath: The Early Years

Swami Vivekananda, originally known as Narendra, was born on January 12, 1863, on the sacred Makarasankaranti Day. As a young boy, he was full of energy and restlessness, much to the frustration of his mother, who sometimes called him a “Shiva’s Danava”. However, beneath his energetic exterior was a curious mind that found joy in meditation and a fascination for wandering monks.

As Narendra grew older, he excelled in his studies and delved into Western philosophy, questioning the traditional beliefs of Hinduism. His quest for truth led him to encounter a holy man named Shri Ramakrishna. Despite their seemingly different backgrounds, Narendra felt a magnetic pull towards the wise sage.
